WHAT IS A FIRST-GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENT?

At Â鶹, first-generation refers to students whose parents have not completed a four-year college degree. We also embrace a broader understanding—any student who may not have prior exposure to navigating higher education and could benefit from extra support is welcome.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF JOINING THE FIRST GEN FLYERS MENTORING PROGRAM?

First Gen Flyers is a two-year program that supports students during their first and second years of college. The program helps students successfully transition into college life while building confidence, community, and leadership skills.

What to Expect

• Year One: Focuses on connection, adjustment, and building a strong foundation for college success
• Year Two: Emphasizes growth through leadership development and transformative experiences

Program Highlights

• Celebrate first-generation identity through community-building events like Lunch & Leads and First Gen Hangouts
• Earn up to two (2) Co-Curricular Experiential Learning (CCEL) credits
• Build meaningful connections with fellow first-gen students and supportive faculty and staff
• Participate in Volamos Juntos, a video storytelling series that highlights first-generation student experiences and helps families navigate college life and resources
• Access workshops and resources designed to support academic, personal, and professional success

HOW CAN I JOIN?

The First Gen Flyers Program is open to all incoming first-year students and first-year transfer students who are interested in community, mentorship, and additional support during their college journey. While the program centers first-generation student experiences, any student who would benefit from this support and learning environment is welcome to participate.
